I spent more than thirty years volunteering within the court system and became deeply involved with a range of organisations supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged communities\, serving as an ambassador and contributing wherever I felt I could make a difference. These experiences brought immense meaning and purpose to my life. \nIn more recent years\, life shifted dramatically when my partner suffered a severe brain aneurysm. The last decade brought a very different role – that of caregiver\, advocate and companion. It was a journey filled with challenge\, devotion and resilience. Like many carers\, I found that while looking after others so much of myself was quietly put aside. \nAbove all\, my first and greatest love has always been family. Michael and I have been fortunate to build a life surrounded by love – with our two married children and their partners\, and six lively\, beautiful grandchildren who bring endless energy\, joy and colour to my world. Family has always been my anchor and remains at the centre of who I am. \nEventually I realised that somewhere beneath the responsibilities and routines\, there was another part of me patiently waiting – my inner self asking for space\, quiet and renewal. \nArt became that place. \nI attended the Victorian College of the Arts for approximately three years\, studying painting in evening classes. I loved everything about it – the energy of the students\, the stimulation of learning\, and most of all the joy of painting itself. I was honoured to be accepted as a full-time student; however\, when COVID arrived\, that path unexpectedly paused. \nWhen life gradually returned to a more normal rhythm\, I continued my artistic journey through the Victorian Artists Society\, where I have been fortunate to learn from an inspiring teacher and further develop my practice. I also completed three courses with L’Escalier\, a French art school\, through Zoom studies\, which opened new perspectives and challenged me to keep growing and experimenting. \nPainting gives me a freedom that is difficult to explain. When I paint\, I enter another world entirely. I no longer feel confined by age\, responsibility or expectation. Instead I feel like a young woman again – in my imagination I am wearing high heels\, red of course\, and a flowing red dress. There is movement\, confidence and joy. In those moments I am completely happy. \nI primarily work in oils and have developed a deep love of portraiture because faces hold endless stories. I am fascinated by expression\, by what sits beneath the surface\, and by the humanity we carry in our eyes. More recently I have also discovered a growing love for still life – finding beauty and quiet significance in ordinary objects. \nI also enjoy working in watercolour\, particularly while travelling\, where its spontaneity and ease allow me to capture moments and impressions with freedom and simplicity.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Working across painting\, embroidery and sequinned textile\, the project unfolds as a sustained inquiry rather than a series of discrete statements. Through repetition\, gesture and duration\, twinhood is approached not as duplication but as relation – shaped through closeness and exchange. \nAcross the exhibition\, attention accumulates slowly. Familiar images of sameness are revisited and subtly shifted; difference emerges within resemblance. Gesture\, memory and perspective become sites where individuality and reciprocity are held in sustained tension. Hand-sewn sequins recur as both material and metaphor – registering time and labour while resisting the speed and frictionless clarity of digital imagery. Reflection remains unstable\, images shifting with light\, movement and proximity. \nThe exhibition resists immediacy and spectacle. Meaning develops through closeness and return\, producing a quiet disorientation in which looking becomes exchange. Inspired by eighteenth century anatomical plates. Anne combined sequins\, patchwork\, and paint into richly layered compositions. These works led Anne to winning the Mama Duke Painting Prize at the Fine Arts Graduate Exhibition. \nAnne’s current practice focuses on twins\, investigating identity\, duality and the complex relationship between self and reflection. Through sewing sequins and textiles\, Anne uses material as metaphor for mirroring\, response\, and connection. Utilising the slow and meticulous process of tambour beading\, Anne’s work creates a space for contemplation\, new ways of seeing and understanding the movement and change in relationship with self and others. \n  \nEmma Dash  \nEmma Dash is a Melbourne-based artist working across painting and textiles. Her recent practice reflects on the experience of twinhood\, emergence from and the complexities of shared identity. Working collaboratively with her twin sister\, Anne Dash\, she explores intimacy\, mirroring\, identity\, and differentiation through layered material processes and figurative imagery. Being a child migrant clearly affects my connection to the land. It is a strange place\, with its own rhythms\, regularly and brutally interrupted by human incursions. I often piece together drawings from excursions and immersion. The studio paintings are rarely representations of a single specific location but are collected narratives. The portrait works have been driven by the notion of ageing and invisibility\, often cited by older members of the community.  Whereas the recent sculptural forms explore a different kind of personal landscape\, in the issues of conflict over geography\, the resulting diaspora and displacement. \n  \nArtist Bio \nIan Bracegirdle studied a Diploma of Fine Art at Caulfield institute of Technology and a Graduate Diploma in sculpture at the Victorian College of the Arts. Ian has been responsible for many projects in Australia and internationally\, including an appointment as designer for the River Parade at Melbourne Commonwealth Games. Working as a designer over many years he has been responsible Exhibitions at the National Museum\, The National War memorial\, Museum Victoria and the South Australian Museum. As well has his significant contribution in the design field\, he regularly exhibits his studio work\, the most recent work has been shown at 45 downstairs and the Montalto Sculpture Prize.\nIan is also a singer song/writer releasing his album in 2025 “the weather is broken” with his band Blueboat theory[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Ponch Hawkes” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Artist Statement \nARCOLATRY. AND SPACE \nBears and humans have been dancing in my dreaming\, awake and asleep for some time now. About two years ago I read an article about bears and hibernation and how the scientists engaged in space exploration\,  saw promise in unlocking the mystery of this animal that could sleep for six months\, not eat or defecate and still maintain its bone density and muscle mass. \nHumans can’t match it. We just don’t have it\, we can’t be bears. \n  \nArtist Bio \nPONCH HAWKES has a long established photographic practice. Her work explores the themes of the body\, the environment\, community and relationships through a feminist perspective often using her imagery to engage in contemporary critical debates. In 2026 her work was exhibited at The Australian National Gallery and the National Gallery of Victoria. This is her first painting exhibition.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Works may explore tensions between control and impulse\, nature and artifice\, reason and sensation\, or the conscious and unconscious. \nArtists may respond conceptually\, emotionally or physically to the theme of instinct as a driving force in human behaviour and creativity. \nThe exhibition will feature a wide range of voices and visions. Through painting\, drawing\, mixed media\, photography\, video\, digital media\, installation or interdisciplinary practices\, artists are invited to respond\, exploring what it means to act\, create and exist before logic\, before structure\, before explanation. \nThe Polish Art Foundation will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2027. A not-for-profit organisation\, it was founded in Melbourne in 1977 and has played a distinctive role in promoting artists of Polish heritage within Australia\, while also creating opportunities for artistic exchange between Polish\, Australian and broader multicultural communities. \nThe Foundation emerged from a practical act of support for artists who had recently arrived from Europe at that time\, giving rise to an organisation dedicated to cultural connection through contemporary visual art. Today\, almost five decades later\, the Foundation continues to present thematic exhibitions\, workshops\, social events and collaborative projects\, supporting both established and emerging artists. \nIts aims include promoting artists of Polish heritage to the Australian community\, collaborating with local Australian artists\, encouraging contemporary visual art in all its forms\, working with aligned cultural institutions and galleries\, and building a collection of works for future generations. Franklin (sue.k.) returns to Melbourne with a new body of work. Further exploring her materialist positioning as an artist\, the development of the work for Slivers of Time adhered to strict rules of format and composition with the motif of a single sphere and an horizon line becoming simply devices for navigating space. Freed is the exploration and discovery of the material of the medium of Inktense Pencil. \nBy approaching the production of the work in a diaristic structure\, with an addition of writing down thoughts and feelings relevant to the day when a drawing was completed\, each work provides a slice of time framed and hung one-by-one in a row that mimics that of a filmstrip. Since then\, she has maintained an ongoing practice focussed on sculpture\, drawing\, and experimental video work\, as well as performance pieces. Much of this work has been conducted under the name of sue.k with a return to using her full birth name\, Suzanne Franklin\, taking place in 2012. Its an asymmetrical movement indicating uneasiness and discomfort\, with a sense of impermanence and loss of control. The concept of slipping sideways encompasses the absurd\, out of character\, not normal\, and free of directness. \nMore elderly women are becoming homeless who have never faced circumstances outside of their control before. This is a re-occurring theme in my work which involves memory and a sense of injustice since I started exhibiting in 1987. It allows for hybrid forms to go off at a tangent into something you don’t know what you are looking at.  It is crossing a line with what society chooses not to see\, and how it views women who don’t conform to its norms. The point is\, it could be anyone\, battling for visibility and wanting to be treated with humanity. \nThe essence is towards a unity of opposites even when the present is unpredictable and uncertain. She has a BA Fine Arts (Printmaking) with a special interest in creating unique state prints. \nJennifer was born in north west NSW into an aviation family. Flying low over the Australian landscape in small aircraft gave her an aerial perspective of the world from a very young age.  Living close to the bush and swimming in the sea have always been close to her heart\, producing a profound fascination with the natural world and this ancient land we call home. \nGathering detritus from storm washed beaches\, kelp\, seaweed and sea sponges\, delicate plant life\, the patterns of roots and branches\, the mysterious sacred geometry of our world that knits everything together. Intricacies of plant forms\, in sea or on land\, ancient formations of weathered stone or mountain ranges all exert a powerful fascination that never grows old. \nJennifer spent nine years in Italy\, living in a rural area absorbed in local life\, history and culture while working and exhibiting. She is well known for her love of surface treatment\, frequently burnishing the leather hard clay surface with polished gemstones or the back of a spoon\, then often adding slips\, oxides and sgraffito details before firing. \nA multiple award winning artist\, Jill has conducted many workshops in New Zealand and across Australia\, imparting her knowledge and experience to all levels of ceramic artists from professional to beginner.
