Each line\, gesture\, or trace carries emotion\, memory\, and intention. These marks invite you to interpret\, to connect\, to complete the story in your own way. I have a narrative for every piece in this exhibition; every viewer will bring their own narrative. Every experience has a different story to tell; every story makes a different mark. \nArt has never needed to reproduce the world exactly. From the handprints on cave walls to the paintings in Lascaux\, mark making has always been a record of human presence – a narrative stretching across thousands of years. These early marks remind us that storytelling begins long before language. \nThis exhibition continues that lineage: marks as memory\, marks as meaning\, marks as narrative.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]I studied printmaking at CIT 1981 – 1983\, then Art on Paper Conservation at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts\, London. 1984 – 1986. Not happy with that I went on to a Post Graduate Diploma of Art History and Film Studies\, University of Melbourne\, 2003 and a Post Graduate Diploma of Teaching\, MGSE. 2012. \nI suppose that my art really tries to counter my life. \nMy reality is chaotic\, rushing trying to organize a million things. Looking after my autistic children and the chaos that brings. The endless questioning of myself by myself and I feel everyone else. Always being judged and found wanting. Mess. \nMy work to me exudes a calm that life is lacking; I am not trying to make a strong political statement. I could on so many topics; disability\, patriarchy\, ableism\, ageism\, the environment\, the inequality in our education system\, the life expectancy gap between indigenous Australians and white Australians\, homophobia\, transphobia\, people who hates cats\, people who judge others based on petty rivalries. Even this is an incomplete list. \nI want to create works that in the first instance\, I enjoy making. To be immersed in the process. Flow. To stop and look and think\, yep\, that makes me satisfied; that I have tried\, not every piece is a success\, but they are all part of the process. \nCalmness. Soothing – not a valley of misery. I want to share the stars. A sense of belonging.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][/vc_column][/vc_row]

And kiss them celebrates two artists who have been friends and colleagues for several decades and presents a continuing dialogue between their respective studio practices. \nBoth artists independently explore intimate topographies of love\, memory and history. These explorations raise questions of how certain objects\, notions and connections might exist outside of human understanding and how the gaps between intention and execution and between execution and reception leave marks and traces over time. \nThe title of the show speaks of an aspiration to share artwork that moves others.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artists’ Bios” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Trudy Clutterbok\nTrudy Clutterbok makes space for people who have complicated feelings about themselves and life. She does this by making works on paper as part of her studio practice and in the setting of her psychoanalytic practice. Since 1984 she has made and shown drawings\, paintings and super 8 films. Since 2020 she has also focused on printmaking. She recently won the Michael Beazer Works on Paper prize. \n  \nSal Cooper \nSal Cooper is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose practice spans independent filmmaking\, hand-drawn and stop-motion animation\, installation and performance events. Her work centres on the animation of objects and drawings to explore the latent vitality of the world around us and consider how things might exist beyond human perception or understanding. Her collaborative work has given rise to a body of commissioned material that includes major theatrical/performance works\, concert pieces and music videos as well as short films. While the integration of music within the context of moving image is a central part of her practice\, Sal’s artistic output also includes expanded drawing works and sculptural pieces which she exhibits in regular solo and group shows. She is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is processed over time\, revealing poetic layers of the deeply felt experience of objects in space. \nErica Wagner’s paintings and mixed media artworks\, inspired by visitations from a neighbour’s white rabbit\, reveal her lifelong passion for storytelling and curiosity about personal narratives. \nJill Anderson’s work reflects the colour\, and vitality of the places she experiences. Her latest art works emerge from time spent in a tiny\, vibrant town high in the Peruvian Andes. \nLibby Letcher continues her quest of sense making and art making as a way of thinking. Nature’s way of self organisation\, and themes of process and emergence\, guide her distinctive approach. \nUsing the human hand as a icon of generosity\, creativity and reciprocity Lyn Pool explores the notion that ‘All Flourishing is Mutual’. \nInformed by her work as historian and human rights advocate. Mary Sullivan employs layering\, erasure and fragmentation to trace threads of power woven into human stories. \nThrough the lens of archaeology\, Phillippa Croll works in abstract to reconstruct places\, people and objects in the same way artefacts are recovered and put back together to find their true narrative. \nRosemarie Reber explores figures and landscapes shaped by experience\, memory\, and imagination. Artworks must be complete at the time of submission.\nThe entry fee is $30 per artwork. Entry fees are non-refundable.\nEntrants must complete the online application form and submit: an artist statement/supporting statement\, a current artist CV\, up to three images of the artwork. Most were created at a time when I was in dire need of orientation\, in the years after I re-located to Melbourne\, Wurundjeri land\, from my home country of the US. \nThough united by recurring motifs – of clouds\, “beacons\,” the stars and moon – I began few of these sculptures from images\, and most from the assemblage of abstract shapes and the confluence of fluid lines. Thus they are as much a product as an inner vision as an outer one\, as much in reference to old archetypes of way-finding as they are to modernist models of compositional unity. \nIn “Poetics of Space\,” Gaston Bachelard proposes “a concordance of world immensity with intimate depths of being\,” noting the work of poets whose contemplation of vast expanses becomes a meditation on the depths of themselves. That duality of the intimate and the immense is alive in this work\, with its echoes both of the moon’s reflected light and the impressions of my hands on the clay.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=”” font_family=”Arial\, Helvetica\, sans-serif”]Kate Butler is American artist\, writer and educator based in Naarm/Melbourne\, Australia\, on Wurundjeri land. She has also studied and apprenticed at the Leo Marchutz School of Painting and Drawing\, in Aix-en-Provence\, France. We’ll talk through some basic compositional ‘rules’ then we’ll take you through a series of practical exercises that encourage you to explore compositional ideas for yourself – working within or without the ‘rules’.\n\n\nWorkshop 2: Subject matter\n21 June\, 10am – 1pm\nWhat do you want to paint? What do you want your work to communicate? This workshop helps you to unpack these questions\, exploring connection to your work as an artist. It could be a starting point for you\, a deep dive into existing themes that have appeared in your work\, or perhaps a change in direction. Expect self-reflection\, group discussions\, inspiration\, and practical exercises to help you build a personalised visual diary of your practice.\n\n\nWorkshop 3: Colour choices\n5 July\, 10am – 1pm\nThis session explores colour\, providing ideas and tools to give you more confidence with using colour in your work. We’ll discuss colour as a standalone presence\, colour combinations\, the art of manipulating colour through pairings\, and the use of colour in historical and current contexts. We’ll do some simple colour selection and mixing exercises to launch your own colour wheel collection\, creating a solid colour reference for your practice\, and some fresh inspiration.\n\n\nWorkshop 4: Mark-making\n19 July\, 10am – 1pm\nMark-making\, brushwork\, texture… these all work together to create depth\, energy and movement in a painting. This session gives you the chance to expand your mark-making vocabulary as we consider how the marks we make record our own experience as well as impact the viewers experience of our work.\n\n\nWorkshop 5: Strengthening your voice\n2 August\, 10am – 1pm\nThis workshop is more of an open discussion around our work and how we can strengthen our voice and the direction of our practice. Participants are required to bring in some of their own work to talk about. The session will be mostly discussion based\, with one painting exercise included.\n\n\nWorkshop 6: Building your practice\n16 August\, 10am – 1pm\nThis session will involve open discussions about the challenges of surviving as a practicing artist. We’ll give you some practical advice\, helpful templates and real life answers to all of your questions. We’ll have a mini play session creating a pop up exhibition where you’ll be encouraged to talk about your impromptu work in a relaxed and supportive environment. You learn by doing. These skills include manual dexterity in mark making\, practice in compositional language and exploration of colour theory. \nA gradual assimilation is the key to mastering these disciplines whilst holding the observed and the imagined in balance. \nThis Group exhibition represents the work of 17 artists currently working at the school. Their work represents a cross-section of themes ranging from figuration to abstraction. \nMany of these artists pursue independent careers and exhibit regularly outside the school structure. Her work draws on field recording\, verbatim theatre practice\, and personal narrative to explore attention as an artistic and dramaturgical force – attending to the non-human and the ecosystems we share with other forms of life.  \nPerformances include Memorandum (Theatre Works\, 2014) The Waiting Room (with Born In A Taxi\, 2010-2015) and Earshot (2017-2019). More recent works invite audiences into more intimate sonic encounters\, and include MicroSonic (Hobson’s Bay ‘Dear Agnes’ contemporary public art program 2026)\, and Near Sighted  (fortyfivedownstairs 2023). In 2024 she created The Symphony Series (with Rea Dennis) with Rawcus Theatre\, and Lick/Leccata (with Katie Lee\, Luigi Vescio\, and Annette Wagner) at the European Cultural Centre\, Palazzo Mora\, at the 2024 Venice Biennale.  \nKate was associate artist with award-winning physical theatre company Born in a Taxi for 15 years\, and has trained extensively in the Suzuki Method of Actor Training\, Viewpoints and Composition. This progressive painting and body of work cascades as a visual journal of her time spent in Wentworth Falls. Anthea connected with the breath-taking nature of the sacred land of the Barkindrji river people and Gundungurra people. Anthea painted her connection to energy through lyrical abstraction and sensation that was found in the metaphysical energies in the earth and specifically the birdlife that consumed her during her stay in the Blue Mountains. This work is accompanied by tufted paintings that ground the avian energies\, through bulbs\, sunlight\, and landscapes of the elemental spirits of earth\, water\, air\, fire. \n  \nExhibition Text by Nirmala Krishnan PH.D \nAvian Consciousness in Flight\, an avian consciousness\, a winged geometry echoing with vibrational intelligence\, weaving songs of energy through spirals\, waves\, and multidimensional grids. The spirals at each end are feathers of ascension\, charting the soul’s flight inward and outward\, always returning to Source. Zigzags and waveforms ripple like wings mid-beat\, awakening the central chord\, unlocking codes hidden in bone and breath. \nLayer upon layer moves like wind currents\, etheric\, astral\, physical flowing together in interdimensional flight. Dots and curves are sky-beacons: nodes of intent pulsing across space\, as in cell into cell. At the heart\, a spiral sun the galactic nest radiates light codes. Infinity loops glide like eternal flight paths\, connecting mind to higher skies. Colours in harmony\, rhythm golds of solar wisdom\, greens of forest breath\, violets of crown-lit skies\, all in harmony\, all in motion\, all in flight. When I had only 10% hearing as a Deaf child\, I was able to wear hearing aids and heard many sounds that became visuals. I have been using my artistic process to meditate on those memories into colour lines as notes. Working on this large 3-meter long work\, I filmed a portion of myself in creation process and saw my memories of those sounds play out in my movements and I chose music with the help of my hearing partner Zoe\, that fit just right with this work just like that. I recorded those notes of my memories of each section along the paper in white pen and pastel on the black that acts as a veil for memories of sound from Deaf ears.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Artist’s Bio” tab_id=”1518320329651-b769a1a3-29e6905c-b0b3368e-b9ef2edb-f0663f53-0933″][vc_column_text css=””]Chelle Destefano is a Deaf multidisciplinary artist working in drawing\, painting\, printmaking\, performance work and textiles. Her works currently centre around memory and identity exploring childhood memories and her inner-child which is an important part of her identity and her Deaf experiences. Chelle believes Auslan should be a site of resistance against audism and oppression for the Deaf culture and Deaf community. Recently Chelle was selected for the Art Gallery of Ballarat exhibition program to have a solo exhibition later this year. Chelle has been a finalist in many art prizes including the Michael Beazer Works on Paper Prize\, Wyndham Art Prize\, Nillumbik Art Prize\, Castlemaine’s Print Prize\, Kedumba Drawing Prize\, Incinerator Art Award\, Footscray Art Award\, Lyn McCrea Drawing Prize and the Lake Art Prize. Inspired by Caravaggio’s mastery of tenebrism\, I present subjects that appear to float on a void\, illuminated by an almost theatrical beam. From the beginning\, the vision was to create an intensive two-week program where audiences could experience both beloved masterworks and bold new music side by side\, and where diversity of voices\, styles\, and perspectives is genuinely at the centre of the programming. \nWhat do you love about performing at fortyfivedownstairs? \nI first performed at fortyfivedownstairs in 2008\, when I was living in London and returning to Australia every year or two. I loved it immediately\, for both its resonance and captivating atmosphere. It is an unexpected “loft-style” performance space of the kind that you find in New York and Berlin. I also know so many colleagues – actors\, visual artists\, sound designers and musicians – who share this love\, so it has a community spirit as well. \nFor a patron who hasn’t attended a Chamber Music Festival event\, what would you recommend as an introduction?  \nTry opening night – Helen Morse reciting excerpts from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Nights’ Dream\, accompanied by Mendelssohn’s beautiful (and virtuosic) incidental music… Or come along to a night inspired by Romeo and Juliet\, with visiting American virtuoso Marc Peloquin\, featuring works from Tchaikovsky to Bernstein… Or a vivid night with the complete Brahms Hungarian Dances\, arranged for piano four hands\, violin and cello\, paired with Mendelssohn’s 4th Symphony. Each work is inspired by a memory of a specific place and being absorbed in the natural surroundings. This has been a continuing theme in Laura’s work in recent years\, and it also speaks to a broader need to seek our own forms of stillness\, whether in nature or elsewhere. \nThe title of the exhibition ‘sea like a mirror’\, is a phrase drawn from the Beaufort wind force scale\, a system developed to determine wind force through observations of the surrounding environment. But while this phrase is reflective of calm conditions and stillness\, if ‘sea like a mirror’ is read a different way\, it could be about seeing in the environment a reflection of ourselves. \nThe artworks in the exhibition are all created with watercolour on paper\, either as paintings\, collages\, sculptures or installations and using processes of painting\, layering\, attaching\, folding\, sewing\, or suspending. Combining fine art photography\, couture garments\, sound\, and spatial design\, the exhibition explores memory as something lived\, embodied\, and continually shaping the present. \nExtending beyond the frame\, the installation transforms still images into sculptural garments. Davison’s photographs are printed onto fabric\, deconstructed\, and reassembled into couture gowns — allowing memory to move\, fold\, and breathe. The result is a layered experience that dissolves the boundaries between image\, body\, and lived experience. \nSet within a dreamlike garden environment\, the exhibition invites visitors to consider how memory is formed\, distorted\, preserved\, and worn.
