‘I remember Pussy Riot, and Treaty. I remember the history books I started and never finished. I remember the beetles that wouldn’t stop breeding. The knocks on the door after midnight. The loss of the arctic. The death of George Clooney…’

Written and performed across Melbourne and Amsterdam by multi-award winning artist Emma Mary Hall, World Problems is a funny and poetic reflection of our monolithic, interconnected world. Inspired by the German pop-historian Oswald Spengler, the feminist theorist Donna Haraway, and the multi-million-billion-trillion lifeforms living and dying together in our biosphere.

Emma is an actor, writer and theatre-maker from Adelaide, now based in Melbourne. She has written, performed and toured two award-winning and critically acclaimed solo works: We May Have to Choose (2015) and Ode to Man (2017), both directed by Prue Clark. We May Have to Choose was nominated for eight theatre awards and won five, including the Melbourne Festival Discovery Award and Best Theatre award at Auckland Fringe. It has most recently appeared at the Asociación Cultural Peruano Británica in Lima, Peru. Ode to Man received the Best Emerging Writer award and a nomination for Best Performance at 2017 Melbourne Fringe, and recently appeared at 2018 Brisbane Festival.

‘World Problems is simple in its presentation though grand in its ideas… definitely a show to share…’ Theatre Press

‘World Problems isn’t only a show for humans. This is a show for every living thing on this planet. More importantly, World Problems is show about bringing every living thing together and working on keeping us all alive.’ My Melbourne Arts

‘[W]hat this work proves is that art still has the ability, dare, the responsibility to continue to uphold pivotal conversations, which through discourse, still bring individuals together.’ Melbourne Critique

WORKSHOP DATES & DETAILS
Thursday 14 March:
Q&A World Problems, Art & Change – Alex Kelly & Emma Mary Hall
Emma Mary Hall will be joined by film maker, artist & activist Alex Kelly for a post-show discussion about the role of art in social change.

Saturday 16 March: The Art of Frugal Hedonism: A Guide to Spending Less While Enjoying Everything More – Annie Raser-Rowland
Annie is the author of The Art of Frugal Hedonism, a book that shows how incredibly pleasurable frugal living can be. In this non-pious, rollicking guide to ethical living, Annie shares philosophical and lifestyle hacks that can help readers save money, inoculate themselves against many of the ills of modern life, and live more lightly on the earth – all while enjoying everything more. This workshop offers a glimpse into this fresh and liberating alternative to the daily grind and consumerism.

Sunday 17 March: Future-Proofing your Homes & Neighbourhood – Joel Meadows
Joel Meadows has a deep well of experience to draw on in this introduction to retro-fitting your home and neighbourhood for energy efficiency. He has been an energy auditor, sustainable transport consultant, environmental educator and has built his own strawbale house with impressive passive cooling, heating, lighting and water strategies and rocket stoves for heating and cooking. Joel understands not everyone has the means to build a passive energy house from the ground up but fortunately there are heaps of things you can do as a tenant or home-owner to retro-fit existing houses for energy efficiency. In this workshop, Joel will share some of them with you as well as touch on the concept of retrosuburbia.

Saturday 23 March: Eating the Future: Growing Sustainable Food Systems – Kat Lavers
Kat Lavers is a bit of a super star of the permaculture community. Her main claim to fame is having one of the most productive inner-city gardens in Melbourne. In 2018, Kat’s garden produced a whooping 428 kilograms in fruit, vegies, herbs and eggs from her 280 square-metre Northcote property (that’s less than 1/14th of an acre and includes the house!). There is sometimes a belief that you can’t grow much food in the suburbs but Kat is living proof that that simply isn’t true. Kat’s workshop will inspire you to see the potential in your own backyard and offer you practical tips on growing sustainable food systems.

Sunday 24 March: Economic Activism: Using your dollars for change – Rachel Deans
Join Rachel Deans, a shareholder action campaigner at Market Forces, to explore how anyone can wield their wallet for climate change whether you own shares or not. Learn about the successful track record of shareholder activism and come away armed with the tools you need to influence your bank, insurance and superannuation companies to adopt better policies for the environment.
