In a return season, HST co-founders Justin Hosking and Mark Diaco will be alternating the roles of Austin and Lee in Sam Shepard’s modern masterpiece, True West.
Austin, an Ivy-league educated writer who is finishing off a screenplay that is sure to be a hit, is house-sitting his mother’s quiet Los Angeles suburban home.
That is, until his estranged, lawless, drinking brother Lee, who has been living aimlessly in the desert, drops in. Having not seen each other for five years, the two complete opposites navigate the inextricable tension that permeates between them. The sons of a desert-dwelling alcoholic father clash violently over a film script and the notion of what the West means. A brutal stand-off ensues. Perhaps they are not as different as they seem.
Through this dark comedy, Shepard deeply explores the psyche through sibling rivalry, revealing its double nature. All the while, the grinding muscularity of brotherly love is ringing with the temperature of our modern times.
