“I call useful all that gives us happiness… Art shows man his raison d’être.” – Rodin

Concert 2: The Usefulness of Art
Adam Simmons Creative Music Ensemble
Composed by Adam Simmons

The second concert in Adam Simmons’ The Usefulness of Art series.

This suite celebrates the qualities that art helps engender, including acceptance, empathy, generosity, compassion and faith. “The Usefulness of Art” has previously been performed and recorded by Origami as a trio and as a solo work for MONA FOMA. Expanding the work for the much larger Adam Simmons Creative Music Ensemble builds upon the contemplative nature of the music, bringing in a more ecstatic experience as well.

Concert 1: Concerto for Piano and Toy Band
2-5 March

Two iconoclasts come together to present a work that combines classical forms with jazz sensibility. Michael Kieran Harvey is an internationally recognised, classically trained pianist who has championed contemporary composition, while Adam Simmons’ work with his infamous Toy Band is acclaimed for its unique blend of jazz, art and entertainment. Not to mention a rubber chicken or two… Read more.

Concert 3: Travelling Tales
7-10 December

This will be the Melbourne premiere performance of Adam Simmons’ “Travelling Tales,” a suite composed and performed for the 2013 Piraeus Festival in Athens, Greece with Intrarti Orchestra. The music is influenced by a mix of Adam’s road trips around Australia, European travels, his love of Japanese shakuhachi music and his belief in the usefulness of art. The experiences, sounds and concepts come together to create musical landscapes and images, both panoramic and up close. Read more.
