… [a] stimulating discussion on what ‘abstraction’ can mean within different creative disciplines…
Four artists with seemingly divergent practices come together in a cross-pollination of inspiration taken from the natural world.
Sharing commonality in the use of abstraction, this exhibition explores the process of art-making and its role connecting the artist’s inner world to the outer, while also stimulating discussion on what ‘abstraction’ can mean within different creative disciplines.
Grace Knight is a multidisciplinary artist, known prominently for her work in music, both with the band Eurogliders and as a solo artist. Here, Knight celebrates her debut exhibition. Twisting materiality from hard to soft, she creates abstract depictions of Agate and Geode formations as large scale tufted and carved woollen pieces.
Charlotte Ivey is a visual artist based in Merri-bek, born in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Ivey’s work is led by the impulses of the body – exploring the illusory nature of psychological states, and how they dictate our experience of external environments. She charts a territory somewhere between the traditionally ‘beautiful’ and ‘distasteful’.
Simon Leah uses the unpredictable results of the patina process in his assembled metal sculptural works to celebrate the abstract beauty of ‘chance’ within his considered purposeful forms.
Lana Daubermann’s practice is rooted in plein air observation of the Australian landscape. Here, she loosens into an abstracted approach, favouring shape, colour, and gesture over realism.
For all four artists, the process of creation is of utmost importance, leaving us with works that truly resonate with a depth beyond the finished surface.
