fortyfivedownstairs is excited to announce our fifth annual open-call small works exhibition: SMALL!
This exhibition is open to all artists, whether you are a child artist, a first-time creator, or an established professional. Every submitted artwork will be displayed in our gallery on Flinders Lane in Melbourne’s CBD, making SMALL! a truly inclusive showcase for artists of all experience levels.
We welcome a diverse range of styles and media, including painting, drawing, photography, prints, textiles, and small sculptural works.
All submitted artworks must meet two simple criteria: they should not exceed 20 x 20 cm (including any framing) and must be suitable for wall hanging.
Every artwork will be priced at $150, regardless of the artist’s level or the medium used.
The artworks in the exhibition will be displayed anonymously, ensuring equal opportunity for all artists and encouraging visitors to select their favourites based solely on their appeal. Only when an artwork is sold will the artist’s name be revealed to the buyer.
This year, for the first time, we will be awarding prizes during the opening night on Wednesday, November 26, from 5 to 7pm. The award categories include: Under 18 Prize, Painting Prize, Drawing Prize, Photography Prize, Textile Prize, Sculptural Prize, Print-Making Prize and Mixed-Media Prize. Additionally, visitors will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite work in the People’s Choice Award, which will be announced after the conclusion of the exhibition.

The exhibition will run from Thursday 27 November- Thursday 18 December 2025.
All submitted artworks will be accepted (terms and conditions apply!)
Please read the following instructions carefully before you begin your application:
- Enter your personal details in the entry form below
- Include bank account details for any commission from sold artworks
- Select whether you will be submitting 1 or 2 artworks. Entry fees are $25 for one artwork, and $40 for two artworks
- Enter the details of each artwork, including selecting the colour that best describes your piece
- Upload one image of each artwork. The image file(s) must be smaller than 2MB.
- Select whether you would like your artwork returned by post if unsold. The fee for return postage is $22.
- Read through the ‘T&Cs’ carefully for further instructions
- Click ‘Pay and Submit SMALL! Entry’
- Enter your payment details in the newly opened page
- PLEASE CHECK IF YOU RECEIVE A CONFIRMATION EMAIL WITHIN 24 HOURS OF SUBMITTING. IF YOU HAVE NOT, YOUR SUMBISSION WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL.
- Deliver your labelled artwork to the gallery by Friday, November 14. If you are mailing your artwork, please send it to the following address: fortyfivedownstairs gallery, lower ground, 45 Flinders Lane, Melbourne, 3000, VIC, Australia. Make sure to allow at least one week for the artwork to arrive.

SMALL! Terms and Conditions
- SMALL! is open to everyone.
- There are no age restrictions.
- Artworks must be 20 x 20cm x 20 cm/8” x 8” x 8” or under, including any framing.
- Artworks must be able to be affixed to the wall.
- Up to two pieces per submission.
- Cost of $25 to submit one artwork, $40 to submit two. To be paid online at the time of submission. This is non-refundable.
- Submissions must be made online.
- Artworks must be delivered to the gallery by Friday 14 November, 5pm. It is the artist’s responsibility to ensure that the artwork(s) are delivered by the due date. Artworks not delivered by the due date will not be included in the exhibition, and artists will not be eligible for refunds.
- Artworks must be labelled on the reverse with artist name, artwork title, and hanging orientation. Artwork packaging must also be labelled with the artist name and artwork title.
- Artworks will be displayed anonymously.
- Artworks must be available for sale. No presales.
- All works will be priced at $150 each – artists receive $120, fortyfivedownstairs will retain $30 as commission.
- Two works by the same artist purchased by a single buyer will be sold for a discount of $250- artists receive $200, fortyfivedownstairs will retain $50 as commission.
- Unsold works will be discounted to $120 from Tuesday 16 December – Thursday 18 December – artists receive $96, fortyfivedownstairs will retain $24 as commission.
- Prices are GST inclusive if the artist is GST registered.
- Entrants submit their work with the knowledge that they are committing to the below dates:
- Deadline for submissions: Monday 3 November, 5pm.
- Deadline to deliver work: Friday 14 November, 5pm.
- Opening night: Wednesday 26 November, 5-7pm
- Exhibition: Thursday 27 November to Thursday 18 December 2025
- Unsold works collected: Friday 19 December 12-7pm and Saturday 20 December 12pm – 4pm
- In the event that unsold artworks are not collected on these dates and prior arrangements with fortyfivedownstairs have not been made, they will be disposed of.
- All artworks must be in sound condition on arrival.
- fortyfivedownstairs reserves the right to withdraw artworks if deemed unsuitable for display.
- Artworks on paper will be pinned.
- Original artwork packaging may not be kept.
- Due care will be taken whilst the artworks are at fortyfivedownstairs.
- No responsibility will be taken by fortyfivedownstairs for any loss or damage.
- Artists of unsold works who cannot collect their works in person are expected to pay for postage at the when submitting. Return postage is only available to locations within Australia.
- No refunds.
