The eucalyptus tree becomes a self-portrait and a barrier as Narelle Cridland explores cultural identity, influences and boundaries.
The romantic portrait of the eucalyptus tree celebrates a sense of something that is uniquely Australian. Its majestic and iconic image provides Narelle Cridland, an Australian expat living abroad in an Asian destination with an Indigenous Australian heritage, a sense of self-identity and a strong connection to the Motherland. The symbolic representation of the gum tree provides a cultural vessel and one Cridland uses to embark on a journey of self-discovery. The eucalyptus tree becomes a self-portrait and a barrier as she explores cultural identity, influences and boundaries.
