tumbling and falling and creating new compositions organically, as if they’ve just been dug up and are speaking to us from the ancient world.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Inspiration can strike anywhere. It is not too hard when you are in Rome standing in front of statues at the Capitoline Museum.
An ongoing theme in my work is the fascination of collage and assemblage. I have been trying to work out how I could use actual oil on canvas cut-outs to create a new language. How could I make this work? While standing in front of a Roman bust on my tour of Italy, it dawned on me.
This work should be monochromatic, a plethora of images, tumbling and falling and creating new compositions organically, as if they’ve just been dug up and are speaking to us from the ancient world.
These images were taken from several museums (Museo di Roma, Museo di Palazzo Grimani, Musei Vaticani) on two trips to Italy and create this new body of work.
I could also not pass up exploiting one of my favourite subject matter – markets – hence the flavour of the the streets and food, so prominent in Italy, feature in the creation of my new show, The Grand Tour.
