Virtuoso pianist Yiyun Gu plays music by Liszt, Goossens and young female Chinese composer, Wang A Mao.
The mysterious incidental music by Goossens was written for Maugham’s play East of Suez, which was based on a story set in Beijing in 1920s.
A-Mao’s work was inspired by the traditional Chinese Peking opera. With the power of solo piano, she brings the five main Peking opera characters to life (male/female, young/old, hero/clown), conjuring the colourful costumes, painted faces, movements, gestures.
Based on themes from Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni, Liszt’s dramatic fantasy Réminiscences de Don Juan demands technical brilliance, and it will bring the whole recital to a marvellous conclusion.
