fortyfivedownstairs presents the eighth annual Emerging Artist Award 2022.

It is a pleasure to announce that fortyfivedownstairs will once again be filled with the work of emerging artists for a multi-disciplinary exhibition that explores our engagement with the natural and built environment, interrogates familial relationships through sensory experiences, and challenges our very sense of identity.

Guest judge Anouska Phizacklea (BA (hons), MA, MCom, CPA, GAICD) is Director of Monash Gallery of Art (MGA) awwarded the artists whose submissions most closely align with the award criteria of originality, technical proficiency, and creative vision. Phizacklea has expertise across the visual, decorative and literary arts. She has held senior management positions at leading Victorian public institutions, Heide Museum of Modern Art and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), and worked for many years in art research and valuations in galleries and auction houses in Melbourne and London.

A $3000 prize pool was awarded to the two submissions that best aligned with the award criteria – In My Mind (the voices that tear me apart) by Madeleine Joy Dawes and Pixel by Rhys Cousins.

For the first time, a new third prize for Highest Commendation was awarded to we are made to be held by Jae O’Donnell, who will be receiving a professional development opportunity courtesy of the MGA.

As well, the People’s Choice Award gives the audience a chance to have their say. For those who can’t visit in person, an online catalogue and our social media channels will be available with information and images.

The Emerging Artist Award at fortyfivedownstairs is a proven catalyst for ongoing recognition and professional development and allows audiences the privilege of accessing early-career works by exciting emerging artists.

Emerging Collectors Panel DiscussionFriday 30 September, 6:00pm – 7:30pm
with Anouska Phizacklea, Tim Abdallah, and Liv Kenney

The Emerging Collectors Panel discussion is for those who are looking to understand more about what it means to collect art and how to begin curating a meaningful art collection.

Anouska Phizacklea (BA (hons), MA, MCom, CPA, GAICD) is the guest judge of the Emerging Artist Award and Director of Monash Gallery of Art (MGA). Phizacklea has expertise across the visual, decorative and literary arts. She has held senior management positions at leading Victorian public institutions, Heide Museum of Modern Art and the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), and worked for many years in art research and valuations in galleries and auction houses in Melbourne and London.

Tim Abdallah is a Fine Art Specialist with more than thirty-five years experience working in auction houses, public museums and commercial art galleries in Australia, England, Germany and Italy. He is a graduate of Monash University School of Fine Art, and has also studied at the University of Melbourne as well as privately in London. He joined Lawsons in 2002 as Head of Art and until 2017 was Head of Art, Menzies Art Brands. At present he is pursuing a consulting practice, writing and lecturing on art, and performing valuations under the terms of the Commonwealth Government Cultural Gifts Program.

Liv Kenney is a visual arts curator and researcher. Liv has worked in collections management, exhibition development, and arts administration in the public arts sector, not-for-profit organisations, and private museums. She is passionate about accessibility and audience engagement and is currently undertaking a PhD in Visual Arts at La Trobe University, developing curatorial methodologies to address the absence of images of women in colonial Australian art collections.

The Emerging Artists Panel discussion is for emerging artists looking to hear from seasoned industry professionals on how to enrich and develop a sustainable and meaningful art practice.

Diego Ramírez is an artist, editor and director originally from the Catholic capital of Guadalajara, Mexico. Ramírez completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at RMIT University and an Honours Degree of Fine Arts at Monash University. He is represented by MARS Gallery and is currently the Director of SEVENTH Gallery as well as Editor-at-large at Running Dog.

Marisa Mu is a practicing artist, designer, maker and winner of the 2019 Emerging Artist Award at fortyfivedownstairs. Marisa graduated with Bachelor of Design at The College of Fine Arts in 2014. Marisa’s purpose is to spark happiness and positive change within people through her art. Painting has become a form of therapy for her over the years and celebrating cultural diversity, womanhood and naked candidness is an embodiment of Marisa, both personally and professionally.

Tessa Spooner is the current Gallery Manager at fortyfivedownstairs. She is a senior arts manager with over 15 years industry experience in theatre and the visual arts, dedicated to promoting independent arts and furthering the reach of artists and their vision. Tessa specialises in productions and exhibitions, as well as developing and implementing cultural programs and events.
