There is nothing I love more than telling the stories of everyday life and in this busy and chaotic world I am intrigued by the simple things that make me stop and take notice.
We are pleased to announce Robyn Rich as the recipient of our 2018 Artist in Residence. Robyn will be in residence from 20 February – 7 April 2018.
As part of her residency at fortyfivedownstairs, Robyn will present Daily Encounters, an exhibition of paintings that explore life through the eyes of the Melbourne artist.
After working in the fortyfivedownstairs artist studio, Robyn will turn the gallery into her home studio with the return of the portrait project, painting peoples portraits from life and giving visitors the opportunity to see the artist at work amongst the body of work hanging on the walls.
There is nothing I love more than telling the stories of everyday life and in this busy and chaotic world I am intrigued by the simple things that make me stop and take notice.
I continually ask myself what makes a good image, what tells my story, and allows others to connect with it in their own way? Is it the scrunched up note that I wrote when I was working out how to deal with the ups and downs of a year gone by, or the relentless rubbish we are continually finding discarded and washed up on our beaches, or maybe it is the person taking her dogs for a walk that I see all the time but have never spoken to.
This exhibition is a collection of portraits, still life and landscapes painted in oils, on timber, canvas, vintage tobacco tins, ceramic bowls and old soup spoons with a dash of interactive art thrown in as I turn the gallery into my studio.
Please email us to register your interest in having a portrait painted.
School groups are welcome to book a session with Robyn during the exhibition. Please email us or call 9662 9966
Robyn Rich was born in Melbourne in 1971, she is an artist, wife and mother of one. After 6 years of studying Visual Arts at Chisholm Frankston, Robyn is now embarking on building her art career through exhibitions, commissions, workshops, artist talks and art prizes.
Robyn enjoys working across a variety of mediums including drawing and fabric sculpture, but oil painting is her main passion.
Working in oils, Robyn’s aim is to provide narrative and comment on our everyday experiences, bringing to life the souls and the stories of the people and objects she paints. Within her paintings she examines both the beauty and the emotion that comes with everyday life. She sees beauty in the small, the forgotten and the sometimes very mundane. She is not only drawn to this objects we surround ourselves with, but fascinated with he way we relate to and interact with them, the way they make us feel and the memories they evoke.
Robyn has been part of exhibitions is in Melbourne, Mildura and NSW and has works in both public and private collections. Robyn has been a semi finalist in the Doug Moran portrait prize, a finalist twice in The Portia Geach Memorial Portrait Awards, The Rick Amor portrait prize, and has exhibited at The Johnston Collection House Museum on numerous occasions.
