Convenire is an exhibition of sculpture, photography and works on paper by three renowned Melbourne artists.
The anthropomorphic forms in my figurative sculptures explore the dynamics between the primitive impulse and modern life. This grouping of sculptures presents the figure in all its expressive form, like a wanderer through a landscape, the figure inhabits another world. The interaction between the sculptures and the space was a careful consideration.

The backstory to this body of work is my own ongoing struggle with producing art that has something to say but is not loud about it – talking not shouting.
The text is strictly analogue. Intimate scaled pieces give grammatical breaths within the installation of wall-based works both photographic and paper-based mixed-media. Text based works appear as abstract mark making—the script is not legible by viewing and is not meant for deciphering—it has become an abstract field. The vertical format of a horizontal text produces veils that descend; the words fall and structure dissolves—intention/ sentiment is evoked. My art practice is rarely about total resolution.

The art strives for a concise statement. Interest and exploration is anchored in the notion of ‘less’. I attempt to produce work that is engaging whilst minimizing its activity — expression is a response to our convolute complex society. Political double talk, fake news, bureaucratic overload all combine to congest and obscure clarity. I look for patterns, rhythms, markings and processes that exist both within our corporeal and biological worlds as a catalyst to ignite my investigations. Movement in nature, listening to heartbeats. I look at paradigms where within expansion and contraction exist. At times I am unaware from where my art derives its impetus.

Michael Sibel holds a Bachelor of Fine Art Honours (Monash University, 1998) and Graduate Diploma of Education (University of Melbourne, 2006). Between January 2007 and 2010 Michael was a resident artist of Gasworks Arts Park in Albert Park, Melbourne where he was leading community and education projects.
In 2013 Michael was the winner of the Deakin Small Sculpture Award and in 2008 he won the University of Western Sydney acquisition award for his work Carousel. His work was also seen in Gathering 2 a Survey of Australian Sculpture, 2014, and Contempora 2008 – 2016(Docklands precinct, Melbourne), Montalto Sculpture Award (Red Hill, Victoria), Sculpture by the Sea (Bondi, NSW). Other shows include Inner Circle at the Stephen McLaughlin Gallery (Melbourne).
Commissions Include, Portholes, Gasworks Arts park, Tree of life, King David School, Screen, Fitzroy Apartments.
Michael is represented in collections; Artbank, Margaret, Stewart Collection, University of Western Sydney, King David School, Magid Campus, Deakin University, Monash University, and Various Public and Private Collections.
Rhonda Baum holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours (Monash University). Rhonda is an educator and has been a gallery director/ committee member with various artists run initiatives in Melbourne.
Rhonda has had fourteen individual exhibitions across multiple platforms. Collaborations are an important part of her practice. Most recently in 2016 with Yoko Ono project ‘Arising’, Reykjavik Museum, Iceland and with ‘Cross Gallery’ in Bundaberg, QLD.
Rhonda Baum’s work is represented in collections both nationally and internationally and is a published author of her own writing and poetry.
Jamieson Miller holds a Bachelor of Fine Art, (Monash University 1987) and a Post Graduate Diploma, (Monash University 1991).
Jamieson has had nine solo shows in Melbourne and Sydney over the last 25 years. He has shown in numerous art prizes and group exhibitions, including Montalto Sculpture Prize 2011, Sculpture by the Sea, 2011, Aqueous Bloom, 2009 and The Situation Now, La Trobe University 1995.
In 1991 Jamieson won the Tina Wenchter sculpture Prize.
Commissions include: Trenerry Mews Apartments, Abbotsford Melbourne; The Melburnian Apartments, Melbourne; The Great Western Tiers Sculpture trail, Deloraine Tasmania and Swinburne University, Melbourne.
Jamieson is represented in various collections that include Baillieu Myer, National Bank of Australia, Monash University, Shire of Kyneton, City of Glen Eira, La Trobe University, Council of Adult Education, Standard Roads and various other private collections.
